... we run desktop Linux and all machines except one which is kept for compatibility testing.

As far as RPMs go, they do not execute automatically. To run them you have to be logged in as "root" and since everyone logs in under an id (which isn't root) to get access to the correct shares then no-one can execute an RPM.

To be fair to Windoze - and I don't do this too often - if no one logged in as Administrator and only used limited privilege accounts then even Windoze would be more robust. I've used domain controlled Windoze machines were adding new software is considerably more difficult than it is on XP Home.
