Why do people fall for these things?
Because most people are idiots.

A careful look at an phished e-mail will almost always turn up something odd. 99%+ of the phishing e-mails I see have poor spelling or grammar that no self-respecting company would tolerate, the URL in the link doesn't match what the text says, or the URL doesn't seem "right" for the sender (e.g., www.security-members-ebay.com for something purportedly from eBay). For the remaining 1% or less, I send an e-mail to the company (whose address I've Googled for) and ask if it's for real. So far, 100% have said "no". If they say, "yes", my next question will be, "why are you sending this in an unsolicited e-mail? Haven't you heard of phishing?"
