teach kids how to protect themselves

As a father with kids I understand your concerns, and I would also have to add that someday one has to arm their kids with the ability to defend themselves. We should not be outliving our kids, so a day will come when we are not around. I was lucky enough that my father took the approach of not shielding me from every evil the world can manufacture, but instead teaching me how to deal with it. I cannot tell you how much of a leg up he gave me and my siblings in the world, and amazingly how many arguments he got in with some of my extended family members that thought he was nuts. I can only hope I am successful in the same endeavor. Of course this is easily said than done, and I am not trying to say you don't do this. I know it has to be even harder with you being single. But some parents (and I know a couple) forget that filtering programs and the like are only tools to be employed, and laws only provide a means for recourse once the unthinkable has happened and do not provide protection. They do not allow you to stop parenting and part of parenting is educating yourself on how your kids may find themselves in trouble. True protection comes from being proactive, which HEAVILY relies on educating children. Looking back on my father's experience with my sister, this can seem almost impossible and ever more important today then ever. As you said, the front door is no longer the barrier it once was to sick people.
