Unifying Internet crime laws
Can we wake up and smell the coffee? National governments do what is right for their electors. That is what keeps them elected, whatever you might think about the 'local' definition of democracy.

If US senators think that creating unproved fears about misuse of the Internet and show how big and bold they are in stamping it out, then it is win win. You can NEVER solve unproved problems, so passing legislation makes you feel good and solves nothing.

So viewing pictures of nudes who are over 16 years is fine in some countries, but not in others. And jailing people for visiting some web sites, or downloading anti-Semitic or anti-Islamic materials is OK or not? Do we have a concensus here?

Conspiracy theorists might ask why Google has chosen this moment to make this announcement. Microsoft are currently trying to have a public debate about why the EU are prosecuting them despite the fact that EU law requires such debate to be private.

Yes. Unifying some law may be appropriate. But it will be forever a compromize. And a compromize is normally something that everyone hates equally. And that will not sit comfortably with politicians out for short term gain, because law is about long term pain.

Enjoy.
