It's nothing to do with the US
Read the story, it's only UK citizens (like me) and until 2010 it's only those who need to renew their passport and even they can opt out. Absolutely nothing to do with the US (there is a whole world outside the US believe it or not).

Your Ammendment rights have already been just about annihilated by the PATRIOT Act anyway. The US government has the right to enter your house at anytime and take whatever they want under the Act so they can get your DNA if they want without your consent. All they have to do is say they thought you might be a terrorist. They don't have to believe it, they just have to say it. They don't need any proof at all.

You can still say what you want but if someone doesn't like it they can tell the Government and they can come and lock you up on suspicion of being a terrorist. So don't say things like "I'd like to go to Pakistan, Afganistan or Iraq on vacation" in public or you might end up with a free extended holiday in Cuba. Under the Act you don't have a right to a phone call or a lawyer and they don't have to inform anyone that you've been arrested - they can make you disappear.

Besides unless you've got something to hide why would this ID card bother you? If you're a suspect in something and you didn't do it, surely it helps to eliminate you. Maybe you want to go to jail for something you didn't do (or maybe you did do it)? I'd much rather pay the money for the card than have to bend over in the jail showers to pick up the soap.
