Fascinating
The government and the telcos can already do this. The program simply gives to common people a comparable ability. For some reason, we think the government and the telcos are going to use the information they collect in a responsible fashion while individual people will not. But aren't large organizations made up of individuals?

You might argue that the government and the telcos are regulated - well, so are we. Laws are laws, right?

But they have oversight commissions and things. Yes, and the only reason we don't is that we insist competent individuals should not be burdened with them.

So, which is it? Are individuals supposed to be free of regulatory influence as much as possible or aren't they? Are they by-and-large trustworthy or aren't they?
