Where was the money going to to begin with
I wonder too where they get billions of $$$ lost in some of these articles. One would think that a prudent organizaztion has budgetted for help desk staff to begin with so their salaries are already factored in.

Lost business costs are a real cost, but their measurment is probably flawed. And, if all businesses lost 1 oportunity, doesn't the market as a whole lose an oportunity which in reality balances everything out?

Perhaps these things are measured on missed communication because email servors are down. Again, there are other forms of communication like fax or even IM that can replace those effected by viri.

Lastly, I wonder how the billions lost are calculated if we include the salaries of IT personell that must patch and track down effected systems. What is the purpose of network admins? Now I understand that the sole purpose of your existance is not to track down viri and software flaws but isn't monitoring and regulating the health of your network part of the job description? So again, paying the salaries of network admins is part of the budget already.

Therefore, all of the costs (not losses) should have been appropriately budgetted for to begin with.
