You've been fed a falacy.
Ok, so lets take a realistic view of your claims. Hacking (cracking, phreaking, etc.) has been around for a very long time. It has cost the public untold billions of dollars over the last three decades. Do we agree on at least that much?

Assuming you do agree let's look at how much "help" these so called reformed scum have helped. Has it eliminated hacking? No, in fact it's gone up. Has it created a social stigma so as to deter script kiddies? No, in fact the numbers are on the rise and these guys are worshipped as heros. (Just listen to the Mitnick fans sometime.) Has it in ANYWAY reduced the problem? Not that anyone can see.

So, I say it again. We would be better served if these scum were made harsh examples of and never allowed to A. touch a computer for the rest of their lives, B. Locked away for a very long time, C. Never allowed to make a single dollar for their so called "help" (or if they do it goes to a victims fund and they get NOTHING, D. Locked away for so long the script kiddies never hear/think of them again as heros.

Think of it this way, if you continue to do the samethings, (allowing these scum a public voice) you will continue to get the same results. We've tried it in the manner you suggest and it's FAILED MISERABLY. Let's try taking the hard line approach...
