True, true, it isn't stated very clearly. Using SUS implies at least a decent MS desktop presence. His most vulnerable machines are colocated off-site and protected by his vendor in that case, so we don't know what is running on those--but if he feels they need that kind of protection, the odds are it might be MS happy . Server, gateway, and firewall architecture isn't discussed at all, so we don't know in this case. A properly configured Windows server can provide the level of security you mention, and given his level of expertise, it is indeed possible that is the route his company has taken.

Anyway, we don't know for sure, his perimeter might be entirely *nix with Windows only on the desktop, as you suggest. I just found it interesting, whatever he may have to/choose to use at work, that his recommendations didn't simply state "stop using MS, there's no way to secure it."

I think his last statement was the most true, whatever he may be using, and is true for all of us, no matter what we are using:
"The bottom line is no matter whom you are, someone will try and gain access to your system at some point in existence, and whether or not they are successful is down to you or your administrator."
