HP has no choice...
As do most companies for that matter. The data has to leave the office in order to be used by the company they are dealing with.
No different then if you use a company like ADP for payroll, the data has to sit on their servers at some point for them to access.

And considering the problems thet're having running the business they know (computers), I doubt they'd want to run the one they don't know (retirement funds)
