Sounds like it is encrypted
According to the article the information could not be read without a specific program that had expired the day after the laptop was stolen. Also I do believe it was said that if they tried to pull the information up without the properly registered program then it would look strange and be very difficult to read. It however was not HP's fault. FI is the one that should have had better security themselves. The fault with HP on this one is the fact that they may have made a poor choice when they chose FI.
