One thing that needs to be pointed out is that the sensitive data with the fingerprint scanner should not be physically easily accessible to the person trying to access the data. Keeping your systems physically secure is just as important as keeping them electonically secure. Sure, if you leave you systems out in a dark alley and allow people unmonitored access to them so they can take them to their research lab full of circuit boards, gummy bears and other McGyver-esque devices, then you are in big trouble. The added benefit to this is that the 'passwords' generated by these devices are far more difficult to break when you don't have physical access to the device (for example, an outside hack through the net).

Are the scanners foolproof? No way. Are they effective under the righ circumstances? Absolutely.
