Nice in Theory...
Hi Fred,

"Get one password and you have access to one system, all my others are still secure."

That's nice in theory, but in reality users use the same password for every system. Passwords (especially those that expire periodically) are difficult to remember.

We use 3 month expiring passwords, and the 10 character minimum upper/lower/symbol/number enforced rule. We also use the 3 failure lockout and I can't tell you how often users lock themselves out!

Multiply that by 5 or 6 different passwords and it becomes impossible for the average user. I don't think the SecureID is much better myself, and CERTAINLY don't like the idea of biometrics as they're too easy to spoof or compromise.

Maybe that digital signature (read sophisticated checksum) idea has merit, but whatever gets done the bad guys will find a way around.

But back to the orginal point, multiple passwords, especially strong ones, are just not practical.
