How it works
Apparently you never used a SecureID system.

It works this way:

The user receives a secure card (it looks very much like a calculator) and the numbers it displays change ever 60 seconds or so. You punch in your personal PIN on the card and the new number displayed is the password. It is valid for only 60 seconds.

The new system allows the user to use a SoftwareID, which is program that installs on users machine, gets activated using a single use software token (gets destroyed at activation time), and the rest is the same as above.

The only thing you have to remeber is your PIN but you either have to have the SecureID card or be on the computer where the SofwareID is installed.
