Success...
By "standard," I mean standard for communication. When planning a major new data center to accommodate several tens of thousands of users, and collaborating with other large industry and government organizations, hardware vendors and major integrators, the standard is to talk in general terms about Linux boxes of various capacities, in various clusters, at various geographic locales. No more Unix thises, OS/390 thatses, Solarus others, Windows somethings. We know in some cases, like to backend SAS, we might need another operating system, but we are now beginning to talk in a standard term for planning - and we've never been there before.

By "infrastructure," I mean the salesperson on the floor at Best Buy, the computer tech at CompUSA, the out-of-the-box drivers for that peripheral device you buy. I contend that this will take time to develop and, until it does, the average home user will shy away from Linux.

Let's face it. Today, Linux means business. That's all.
