Upside? Shop around - there's an upside.
Your question:

Why do some people prefer debit cards over credit cards?

Answer:

There are a number of reasons, depending on where you obtain the debit card. My card, for instance, can operate as both a debit and a credit card (on a line of credit tied to the debit account). I pay no fees so long as I pay back my credit balances on time, and pay no interest on any debits or on credits paid within 30 days.

You stated:

These people who lost money via fraud lost it directly from their bank accounts. Now they need to prove fraud and try to get the money back.

Answer: (in the form of a question) Is this always the case? My own card has some protections against fraud involving debits. I would hazard a guess that others do, too.

You further state:

If this had involved credit cards, the card holders would only have to dispute the item on their bills. If you've ever worked on the merchant side, you know the onus is on you to prove the transaction is legitimate, and this is a very high bar.

I reply:

Having not worked on the merchant side of the transaction, I don't know. I do know, though, that I've been happy with my debit card thus far. It helps me pay bills more conveniently, and (where I don't use it as credit) saves both me and the merchant accepting it money.
