XP's built-in firewall is a joke
It will prevent a few common remote hacks and that's it. To be really secure, you not only need a hardware firewall but you'll also need a 3rd party firewall software like Zone Alarm Pro or Kerio to prevent unauthorized programs from accessing the Internet or even executing other programs without your permission.

Two other things I'd add to the list if you're going to use IE. First, get rid of the poorly secured Microsoft Java machine and use the Sun machine instead. This will prevent you from being hit by a number of common exploits. Second, use adware prevention software, such as AdAware, to avoid browser hijacking.
