You're absolutely right
Kevin,

You're absolutely right. The existence of viruses and trojans and other types of malware is an abomination and I would much rather stand united and obliterate those SOB's that create it in the first place.

Fact is, at this very moment in time and space, they are not going away, as much as we'd like them to. That being said, the majority of infected machines worldwide is the result of lax security efforts by the average everyday user. They simply just want to get on the computer, do their thing and get off the computer and continue with their real lives.

However, just as you are supposed to "drive defensively", so too must you "compute defensively." Like it or not, the average every day user is going to have to start figuring out what these products are and how to optimize them best to their environment. I get waaay too many calls from friends and family asking me to fix their computer when in reality, its malware that infected them and they never even bothered to update the engines or scan their machines on regular basis.

The more people are educated, the less likely they are to be infected. The less infectable machines out there, the less likely these authors are going to succeed. No matter how many times you and I may lecture our friends and family, they simply just don't do it.

Now... based on what I just said, who's going to be a better wake up call to them? You and me? or a $300 threat? Money talks. Multiply that by a bunch of copycatters out there, and the user could be held ransom on a weekly basis.

Again, Kevin. I agree with you. The overall premise of ransomware is just plain wrong. But sometimes we have to use perpetrators' evil tactics against them in order to obliterate them.
