We cannot be sure...
Certainly MS drove the last 15 years of PC development, but it is a brave person who extends the thought to say it wouln't have happened without our Bill. With those same pressures highlighted by randrew it is more likely that development would have ocurred in other ways, pushed by those same market forces. So no Messiah, perhaps, just a very astute marketeer.
