No focus
Microsoft continues to make sure that nobody confuses them with a company that has vision and focus. They seem hell-bent on obliterating any record on active software projects for a single company. It's no wonder they can't seem to get anything right the first time (or second, or third, or fourth...). I know they've got good developers, but that's about 25% of the battle. You can have the best developers in the world, but if you don't have focus and a firm, realistic plan for success you will most definitely fail. I don't doubt Microsoft's plan is firm, but it fails the realistic test badly. Their plan seems to be to garner major market share in every single vertical software market in existance, and to create a few new one's along the way. Their lack of focus is clear when you look at how many active products they have on the market or nearing release. They're coming out with a glorified Etch-a-Sketch, for God's sake. It's a good thing they've managed to build up such a huge stockpile of cash because they're going to need it. I see lean days ahead for Microsoft if they don't pare back their codebase and focus on what made them a great company. Maybe the DOJ should have broken the company up...at least then they would have been forced to focus since they can't seem to do it on their own.
