A *nix desktop is simply not ready for the mass market. Most users don't even know/care about this stuff. They just want to get on their computer and play games or read email.

FWIW, I am a *nix advocate. But I've been running it for years and am used to the quirks and configuration issues. Even at that, I still run Windows under linux using VMware, because there just isn't much major vendor support for games and such.

*nix for the public market simply is not a viable option at this point, LindowsOS or not. BSD would even be worse.
