Hardly the first time
There's a long history of MS updates, patches, etc. that conflict not only with other companies' products, but even with their own stuff.

Here's a scenario I've run into plenty of times...

Someone goes on vacation and doesn't use his computer for a week or two, then he lets Windows Update download a ton of updates and install them, maybe in the background. Eventually, the PC is rebooted, and that's when the fun begins.

The most common problems have been disabled internet services and the inability to use System Restore.

There have been dozens of times when I've had to remove updates in reverse historical order, rebooting and rebooting, until I found the update that caused the trouble.

Usually, the update needed to installed by itself, with a reboot, before any other updates -but MS ignored its own warning and let it go into a grouped update queue anyway.

Then there's the situation where people try to lock down IE for better security, but then the enhanced security doesn't allow MS Critical & Security Updates.

And then there are the conflicts between MS updates and alternative browsers, most recently Maxthon.

With MS, the fun never ends...
