"Centralized" vs. "one update interface"
"In the Passport system, people's information was managed by Microsoft instead of by the users themselves and the businesses they dealt with. This centralization of data is generally seen as the reason for the system's lack of popularity."

Doesn't PayPal do the same thing? and it's wildly popular. The only information I'm worried about managing is my payment methods, account number changes, card expirations, etc. The chief convenience of PayPal is that I don't have to enter this information at every transaction, and then remember everyone I have to update when there's a change. I just update PayPal. (How do you do that without SOMEONE centralizing my info?)

Passport would have provided the same convenience, but it was seldom offered to me. That was someone else's decision, not this consumer's. What other "centralization" offense was I supposed to be worrying about, that Passport committed and PayPal didn't?
