Investing in OpenSource makes sense for IBM
1) it's technology that MS does not own and cannot buy control of.
2) IBM can invest as little or as much as it wants without any contractual obligations.
3) Balmer and Gates yell and/or throw chairs every time IBM invests in these projects.

That's a WIN/WIN/WIN for IBM.
