What do you propose instead
I agree the current situation sucks - bu only because we are at the start of a change in the market and business models for may kinds of digital media.

The piggy-backing of the corporates on the backs of the talented folks who actually make the products is sad. The amount of money from a single disc pressing to a new artist is tiny and as recent high profile cases between famous artits and record companies show they even try and screw the people who make their product.

The legal changes in US and now EU that allow such organisations to extend periods of control and erosion of consumer's rights in relationship to this kind of meterial is all counter productive.

However, in principle and intrinsically there is nothing wrong with a rights management system.

Those who produce something people want the right to be paid for their work...(or do you work for free?). The thing is they should be paid, as with other goods, the market value of the product.

The iTunes experience shows that consumers will "endure" a DRM system for compressed low/medium fidelity music if the price is right. This is the market in action... the problem is as with all technology change those with a vested interest in the status quo will do everything in their power to slow or stop change. History should teach them that walking in front of a car with a red flag is not the way to do it!

If you don't get the reference - C19th rail owners in Europe managed to get a law passed in some countries so that powered road vehicles had to have a person walking in front waving a flag to warn people of the danger approaching! Fortunately for Daimler, Ferrari, Porche and others this stupid legal attack on consumers by the powerful corporations of their day didn't last.
