Right now, the AV corps are trying to stay one step ahead of the black-hats. Our cell phones are but a new battle front that is now only being explored.
Even if they scan for viruses at network level, there's still the off-chance that one will slip past and get to your handset. Plus, some cells can be connected to a computer, adding another attack vector. Will a carrier scanning their cellular network stop a virus from comming in to your cell from your own PC via the internet? I don't have to worry about either. I don't use my cell for netsurfing (don't think I can on a pre-paid plan) and I don't connect it to my PC. If I needed to do either one, I would look into cellphone AVs.
