Microsoft has THOUSANDS of AMERICAN workers... What does OSS do?
At best, OSS provides a superior product at a competitive price. If the OSS code is "cobbled up," it's there for everyone to see. Microsoft, for perfectly justifiable reasons, chooses to keep their code away from general scrutiny. We don't know if it's "cobbled up" by duly employed Americans (God bless the USA) with 401(k)s and HMOs, although we suspect that it could constructively bear more scrutiny prior to release.

Healthy competition is a good thing. Let's think about it. If thousands of slackers can create something that competes with the MS holy grail, that really says a lot for both sides.
