Back in the fall of 1994, a hoax started on AOL about a fictitious virus called "Good Times". It was alleged that merely opening it would irreparably infect Windows (which was at V3.11 at that time).

It was definitely a hoax, but Windows 95, and its successors, made "Good Times" come true. Thank You Bill Gates... !NOT.

In the old days, when dealing with files and/or attachments, *OPENING DID NOT MEAN EXECUTING*. It's still that way in linux. It *OPENS* attachments; it *DOES NOT EXECUTE* them. It is possible to set up extremely weird settings in linux to execute attachments instead of viewing them... but *WHY*?

I have a personal theory why Windows works this way. It's all about "Trusted Computing". The RIAA and MPAA don't trust you. They don't want you to view/listen to their product using a your own programs. They want their own encrypted programs to run and control your computer when you use their content. They want you to *EXECUTE* their songs and movies, and turn over your computer entirely to them when you're doing so. That's the mentality behind the Sony rootkit.
