I knew they were going to be trouble
I keep telling myself "someday somebody's going to hide as an online greeting card"

Yup.

My advice:

1. Never, EVER open a greeting card (or any other attachment) from somebody you don't know.

2. Scan all emails and attachments for viruses. All major antivirus software has the capability of scanning emails for viruses, and all major online webmail vendors scan for viruses also.

3. ALWAYS scan ALL attachments for viruses!!

4. NEVER click on a link in an email. It's just asking for phishing. Even if the link looks legit, it could have invisible code attached to redirect to a phishing website.

5. Be wary of emails even from sources you think you know - remember, it's easy to change the "from" address and predend the email is coming from a friend, even if it really didn't.

6. If you have ANY questions about an email, assume the worst. If you get a greeting email from somebody that doesn't send greetings, or if the format of the greeting email changes, or if they send an electronic greeting card from somebody who they normally don't use, email them back asking if they sent it.

Even better, don't use them AT ALL and tell everybody to send you a snail mail card next time.
