Why do they allow this?
Hackers are not necessarily the brilliant computer wizards that Hollywood makes them out to be. I expect that the vast majority of them would have no idea that a vulnerability existed if it were not for 'trouble-makers' who spend their days looking for obscure ways to defeat computer security, announce what they found to the world and THEN publish how to do it...using the weaselword expression like 'proof of concept'.
If they were really concerned with the security of my computer, I would rather that they quietly informed Microsoft (or whoever) and allowed action to be taken without all the fanfare. Chances are any 'exploits' would be fixed before anyone even knew it existed...now, they shout, "Hey, look at this open window we found...Why don't you go in and look around!!"
