You just proved your ignorance
Nothing on WIndows ever requires you to enter an administrative password, except when you log in.

Um, only if you are stupid enough to log in as administrator for your day to day account. You aren't that stupid, are you?

If you don't have an administrative account, you can't install software

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Actually, this is one of the strengths of Windows IMO: you can install software without an administrator account, unlike Linux and OSX where this is 100% impossible. Of course the install program will only have the same rights as the user running the install program so you won't be able to affect any system registry keys or files but a lot of install programs don't need to. If the install program needs to do something that the current user doesn't have permission to do, then you fall back to the exact same security you find in *nix or OSX. Once an admin installs the program, you run it as a restricted rights user, just like *nix or OSX.

and some programs won't even save your preferences.

And some programs have bugs in them, whats your point? If a program is written to save their user settings in system areas then that is a badly written program. Windows, like *nix and OSX, offer programmers the tools to write properly secured applications but developers on any platform have the ability to implement security badly. Truth is that most mainstream programs work just fine in a restricted rights account (guess what type of account I'm running right now?) and 3rd party developers are getting better all the time.

If you are logged in as an administrator, programs can do anything they want, because they are running with administrative permissions already.

Wow, really? What a revelation!! Don't let the fact that all other OSs also work that way ruin your zealotry. If Windows didn't give you the option of creating and using non-administrative accounts then this would be a problem, but Windows does so it isn't a problem.

Interesting you say this though because in the last Vista beta, they did change this and I hated it. I logged in with an administrator account and every time I tried to do anything I had to click OK to "Are you sure you want to do this administrative function?" Aaargh, if I logged on as administrator then yes, I'm sure!

I've used Windows for more than five years, and I've never been prompted for an administrative password.

This just proves what your posts have been screaming all along: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO RUN WINDOWS!!!. If I were to try and install something like Office right now, my Windows machine would ask me for a different login with administrator privileges because I'm not stupid enough to use an administrator account for day-to-day purposes. Are you?
