Not only that...
But I also remember reading that fingerprints were fairly trivial to fake. Someone had a blog that told how to do it using some compound (similar to gelatin?) that can be obtained at any drugstore...this person was able to lift a print, impose it on this substance for a "fake finger" and use that to fool biometric access points into giving entry to someone who was not the person in question.

Also: what do you do for security for a person who's fingers have been damaged (e.g. scarred by burns, or tips lost in an accident)?

Access control needs to demand a) something you have, b) something you know. But there's no logical reason why the "something you have" has to be part of you, and at least several good reasons why it should not be.
