5.01 user base scorned by later releases?
When IE 5.5 was new and I tried it out, I was very disappointed at its poor performance compared to 5.01. I reverted back to 5.01 and got better speed without any appreciable loss in functionality.

By the time IE6 came out, I had migrated to a faster computer anyway, so I didn't do an apples-to-apples comparision. However, I knew 5.01 wasn't supported with bug fixes anymore (a staple for MS software), so I took the plunge and upgraded. Aside from a half dozen settings IE6 changed that I had to fix, it seems to have worked fine.

For those still using 5.01, though, I doubt we'll see them upgrade unless they buy a PC with XP (yes, it does come with IE6 out of the box). I'd imagine they were either like me (didn't like the performance of the newer versions), or just don't care enough to upgrade on their own (which, I think, is probably most common non-professional users). I doubt 5.01 installations will be going away too soon.

Unforatunately, though, those in the latter group are not likely to patch their software either, if they haven't already done so.
