Actually...
Microsoft never "forced" Windows on the world, they just made it so attractive that nearly everybody with an IBM clone that ran DOS decided they couldn't live without it. It got so popular that they made Windows 95, which didn't require DOS (it was built in), and further locked in customers as well as brought in a slew of new ones during the PC/Internet boom.

Fast Forward to 9 years later, and yes, they NOW can force customers to do things (unless they want to stay with older software or migrate to UNIX/Linux/BSD or Novell). It was very good marketing in the beginning, whether or not the software was actually that good, that got MS the lock-in. Once that happened, they reaped the benefits because there's really no other OS the average user (read: computer illiterate) could use.

That is, besides Mac OS, but you have to buy a more expensive computer to use that. Most folks don't want to spend that money.
