Security through Obscurity does NOT work
If you are depending on atackers not having the source code, that is very foolish. Really, the only people that will not have the code are the good guys that would help find security problems.

How many Microsoft programmers have access to the code? Do you trust them all?

How many foreign governments have access to the code? Do we trust all of them and the programmers they give access?

How many college students have access to the source code? Do we trust them?

Most of the "good" guys would not touch Microsofts non-disclosure agreement with a 10 ft pole. And, if they are donating time, they would much rather be playing with open source. The security battle is one that Microsoft can not win.
