Not long.
huh ? let me get this right. the company run by the worlds richest man decides that it wants to get into the 'security software business. the 'beta' version (released to the public with enough confidence to operate as designed - it would be better described as 'public' beta) identifies the leading security software package as 'spyware'. am i to believe that they did not test their product using a basic home use software configuration. how long will it take before people no longer remember that symantec was once considered spyware ? any bets to the outcome 10 years from now ?

For what it's worth, this will probably will fade into a distant memory quickly enough.

How many people out there remember that on several occasions, Symantec was guilty of doing the EXACT same sort of thing. Their Norton AV product flagged GoldMine Software's link to Word (a bunch of macros that helped GoldMine intergrate with MS Word) as a virus? I doubt it was ever reported. However, it caused a LOT of problems for those who used GoldMine, Word and NAV. At the time, Symantec also owned a competing product called ACT!.

BIG fat hairy deal. This isn't some grand conspiracy theory. Microsoft knows they need AV products and even though NAV is probably one of the worst choices (HIGH overhead, slows your system, etc...) it's still better than nothing.
