The REAL question is
"The question is, would we rather risk inconveniencing customers and protect their information and accounts, or do we just do nothing?"

Actually, the real question is why are you in this position in the first place? If real security was a priority for you, you would not be here. You have danced around the question of why did this happen in the first place? Why did you not have real security in place? Why don't you do something about it?
