When did violating the law become a concern?
I don't know, I personally think MS has a great understanding of
the law and how to use it to their advantage. So far they don't
seem to have shown much of a problem with violating the law,
profiting heavily, then dragging out any court case, settling for a
paltry sum, and moving on from there. It's been a great strategy
for them, one that continues to pay off.

Also, I think they will do whatever is the most profitable thing
they can do, regardless of how it affects their customers. They
will carefully balance things--how many users would take the
trouble to drop Windows if we blocked Firefox versus how much
additional profit would we make from doing so. Bolting all those
programs to the OS was probably not in the best interest of
users, but was in the best interest of MS profits, for example.

And as I note above, MS has directly announced that the point of
their DRM is to reduce competition:

"We don't want this technology to be available to every hobbyist.
We need to keep the number of licensees down to a manageable
number. We charge a license fee to keep the number of people
we have to deal with down to a level we can handle."

Corporate Vice President, Windows Digital Media Division
