Something to keep an eye on
I guess the big difference between MS and any other company
controlling an OS is that MS has publicly announced that they
intend to use this feature to reduce competition and keep others
out of the market. Here's a direct quote:
http://dooooooom.blogspot.com/2006/01/drm-go-go.html
"We don't want this technology to be available to every hobbyist.
We need to keep the number of licensees down to a manageable
number. We charge a license fee to keep the number of people
we have to deal with down to a level we can handle."
Amir Majidimehr
Corporate Vice President, Windows Digital Media Division

And that's worrisome to me, and clearly to you as well.

---That being said, as much as people hate and mistrust MS,
they also know that MS is out to make money. Firefox is huge
and browsers are an extremely sensitive issue so there is
absolutely no way (IMO) that MS will do anything to stop Firefox
from working on Windows.---

That's really the key here--MS will do whatever makes it the
most money. I don't think they really fear breaking antitrust or
competition laws. Every time, they've proven that it's more
profitable to go ahead and violate the law, then drag the case
out in court, and get a minor punishment that isn't really
relevant any more. So if there is a greater profit in locking out a
program or a piece of hardware than in allowing it, that's what
they'll do. If Sony pays them a kajillion dollars to only allow
Sony mp3 players to work with Windows, that's the way they'll
go.

I'm reminded of radio stations as far as this goes--it'd be in the
best interests of their customers to play a variety of music, the
best music they can find. But instead, it's more profitable to
accept (indirectly) payola from the record companies to play
specific songs. Even though this is against the law, the penalties
are not strong enough to outweigh the profits. And apparently,
the interests of their listeners are not as paramount either.
