Speculation
Clearly, they're building in the ability to lock out any program or device they want. They haven't necessarily exercised that ability yet, but who knows

So what you are saying is that they might, maybe, perhaps, at some indeterminate time in the future, lock out the ability to run any program on Windows that MS doesn't approve of?

First of all, while the ability is there for Windows, the ability is there for MacOSX too. If you control the source code, you can control what your source code works with and what it doesn't work with. In fact, Apple did just that recently with RealNetworks so let's not be coy about the ability to lock out other programs. If your source is closed, you have the ability.

Second, I've already said that I don't approve of this move for Vista. That being said, as much as people hate and mistrust MS, they also know that MS is out to make money. Firefox is huge and browsers are an extremely sensitive issue so there is absolutely no way (IMO) that MS will do anything to stop Firefox from working on Windows. Same goes for media players like iTunes. Now, if you want to play WMA content then MS is allowed to lock you down as much as they want, as is their right, unless you want to suggest that Apple give RealNetworks full access to its music monopoly?
