Entirely FUD
Great! I'll just uninstall Internet Explorer... no, wait, I can't. Because it's integrated into the OS.

IE the browser is not integrated into the OS at all. The browser is located in c:\program files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and is 91KB. Remove it if you really need that space on your 100GB hard drive! iexplore.exe makes extensive use of an HTML rendering library that is also reused (this is good software design) by the applications/utilities in the Windows front end (help, file explorer, outlook, etc.) but the browser is not integrated at all. Saying this is pure unadulterated FUD. People who say this are only repeating the mantra their overlords at slashdot taught (brainwashed) them. Interesting how there is no outcry when KDE does the exact same thing with KHTML (integrated with help, file explorer, KMail, etc.).

When I so much as browse my HDD, I HAVE to use Internet Explorer. There is no way around it.

Really? Are you sure or are you spreading more slashdot FUD? When I browse my HD, I'm not using IE: http://zabkat.com/

So yes, there is a way around it. Stop spreading the FUD.

Not to mention that there are still many webpages (and very, very moronic companies) that use client side ActiveX controls that require you to use Internet Explorer, or, they only test their webpage with Internet Explorer and not any other webbrowser.

ActiveX controls are really only common on intranets. I can't even remember the last time I ran into an Internet web page that required activeX (other than Windows Update but you can use auto updates if that really, really bothers you). As far as companies that create web pages that don't work in other browsers, complain to them. I use Firefox exclusively and I don't have problems surfing the web.

That's the advantage of having a near monopoly on the computer market, you can set "instant trends" just by your sheer market penetration.

Microsoft is coming very late to the subscription model. Very late! Nice try at FUD though!
