Not entirely FUD.
As far as having to pay a subscription to surf the web safely, use Firefox or Opera if you are that concerned about weaknesses in IE. No one forces you to use IE and nothing at all stops you from using any other browser you want.

Great! I'll just uninstall Internet Explorer... no, wait, I can't. Because it's integrated into the OS. When I so much as browse my HDD, I HAVE to use Internet Explorer. There is no way around it.

Not to mention that there are still many webpages (and very, very moronic companies) that use client side ActiveX controls that require you to use Internet Explorer, or, they only test their webpage with Internet Explorer and not any other webbrowser. Because IE has this really annoying habit of rendering webpages differently than any other browser on the market, the webpage doesn't render correctly on any other browser except IE for pages built around the confounded thing.

Often, software itself is dependent on Internet Explorer (again, usually because of ActiveX) such as management software like Track-It.

As for moving previously free services that we take for granted over to a subscription model, it's not just Microsoft. Many, many companies are moving over to this. I absolutely HATE the idea. I hate subscriptions; I just want to buy software when I need it, not every damn month whether I need it or not.

The reason Microsoft is a target is because, well, they're the largest software company and they can push this Subscription model ahead by forcing their customers to adopt it.

That's the advantage of having a near monopoly on the computer market, you can set "instant trends" just by your sheer market penetration.
