be honest....
I wont debate that windows has flaws, in fact lets even start with an OS with "perfect" code, pristine, no flaws, no "features" no nothing.

how do you stop a program from setting up a rouge SMTP server, a remote control backdoor, and a key logger, yet still have a usable system?

YOU CAN'T, it cannot be done, security products attempt to do things that the masses cannot (like discern good software from bad). As long as grandma can install or execute code, we will require security software.

I run windows, i don't use anti virus, i do periodic scans with an online scanner. In 10 years of computer usage i have never had a detectable virus/rootkit. I did get spyware once but that was mose intentional than anything (curiosity killed the cat).

If you think switching platforms is going to remove the need for security products you are sorely mistaken.
