Good question
It isn't the trojan's release date that is being talked about, it is the "payload" date. In other words, when you run this trojan, you are infected immediately but it won't actually start deleting files until the 3rd day of the month.

Good luck with Linux! Just remember that OS safety starts with you. You can move to an OS that has better security defaults and isn't ever attacked (for now) but you are still the best line of defense. Running email attachments is never a good idea, no matter what OS you are using.
