Maybe all of you missed it.
but the story says the misused server was running a flavor of Unix.

I say misused because the server was used as a SPAM relay, which requires little or no hacking, just a braindead admin and an even worse firewall operator.

And similarly who cares what OS was being run, if thier was any hacking going on it was whatever mail server was loaded on the computer that was breached not the OS.
