Silly? No, but you are confused.
You are totally missing the point, but I'll play along anyway.

>>Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

Um, I DID compare "apples to apples." I compared the prior major releases from BOTH Apache and MS. How is this apples to oranges? (Rhetorical, don't bother answering)

>>If you choose random releases, you can always find one product that has at one point less vulnerabilities than the other.

True, but I assure you what I chose was NOT random. I compared the prior major releases of BOTH products on purpose.

>>WHat's important is to compare the latest.

Wrong. Important to who? What if I wanted to compare the performance of a '69 Charger vs a '69 Mustang? Would you say my comparison is unimportant and tell me it's irrelevant as I should be comparing an '06 Charger vs an '06 Mustang? Of course not! That would be "silly" of you.

>>Otherwise you might want to compare

>>Notice anything? happy

Not only do you fail in trying to prove your point, you are a hypocrite as well. Unlike my example, your comparison IS an excellent example of "apples to oranges." You do realize you are comparing Windows 98SE (Windows OS) with Mandrake 8.x (Linux OS + 100's of other APPLICATIONS)? Included in those security warning are MySQL, gzip, ghostscript, openssl, sendmail, postfix, APACHE - hmmm double dipping are we? LOL)
Tell you what, throw in Exchange 5.x, SQL Server 7, etc.. and add up the security warnings and get back to me. LOL! Who is the silly one?

Now that I've played (along) with you, let me get back on the point which you've totally missed. The point was made by the previous poster (and is maded by many others) that essentially the number of security issues is a result of the popularity of the software in question. Or put another way "the more popular a program is, the more of a target it is to hackers" and thus it will/should have more vulnerabilities. This is WRONG as it totally ignores the design factor. To prove this assertion wrong, one only needs to show one example of where this is not the case. I did that by comparing Apache 1.3.x with IIs 5. My argument still stands. Go back in time a few years. Which web server was the MOST POPULAR? Apache was approximately 4 times as popular as IIs 5 was. So according to the previous poster, Apache should have been targeted by hackers more and in turn had more exploits (including critical ones?). This is clearly not the case, which means the premise is false. No?

Try again. happy
