I?m Not Disagreeing! Ha!
Your totally correct about the average Joe not having one more bit of a problem with email, word processing, typical web surfing, and don?t forget messaging! I will even go so far as to tell you what I found very impressive about the SUSE package. It was the most user friendly Linux system I have seen, and I do know a few people who use Linux so I?ve seen a few. Although I was a little distressed that it took so long to install, I also understood that the lengthy install would include numerous programs and packages that I would need and would have had to probably spend as long or longer installing the additional programs on an XP system. Also the long install included the proper updating which went very smooth and in general very nearly as simple as anything Windows has come up with for updating. So all and all, it gets good points for ease and time of installation.
I was also quite impressed with the wide selection of programs available I could include during the install, and as one would hope they worked perfectly well as they should and I was even pleased to see the included messaging program was very compliant with other messaging programs, and the included IRC was a nice touch as well. SO it gets more points for including a great package of software available that works well.
The interface is fairly good and there is no reason why a computer novice would have any difficulty as compared to XP in getting used to using it. Its clean straight forward and not unattractive, so it gets more points for a good human interface for all basic functions.
For reasons such as those I have just mentioned, you are 100% right that there is no reason why the average Joe who doesn?t do much more then word process and communicate through email etc. should not have any significant issues with a Linux system.
If you are the expert you claim to be on both systems you know fully well where Linux difficulties come in, and the time it can take to get good at accomplishing far more difficult tasks as well as just installing additional software at a later date can be a bit of a headache in certain instances. And the fact is, the very thing Microsoft gets blamed for, that is including programs with the OS that should be available only as an ?add on? to encourage competition, is the very thing Linux must do if they don?t want ?the average Joe? pulling out his hair trying to hunt down and install additional software that will be compatible with his Linux OS.
For most users Linux will ?Lock you in? to a series of software ?choices? you had better select unless you have a lot of time to hunt down alternatives and figure out how to install them.
Don?t cry me a river about how secure Linux is because in order for any supposedly superior security to factor in, it would have to be capable of avoiding or eliminating security problems I have had with XP. Sorry to tell you, due to the simple fact, with free antivirus, firewall and antispyware programs, none of which seem to slow me down to a point where I can ever tell, I have never had anything get on either my desktop or laptop on an XP system that has given me any trouble. SO Linux cant cure any security issues for me. This is despite years of web surfing pretty much where ever I please, P2P sharing and downloading what I want.
Anyone with enough computer sense to enjoy operating a Linux box most certainly has the ability to operate an XP box without ANY security issues. Keeping security systems updated is literally a breeze and keeping XP updated is just as easy. With even the smallest amount of common sense XP is all but bullet proof, and has no true security issues that put the average user at any real risk.
The bottom line is, there is only one good reason and one reason only to use Linux. Its free. It is a good reason, but I?m just tiered of the Linux zealots who refuse to admit they hate to pay ( I hate to pay) for an OS, typically they therefore have a strong distaste for Microsoft and Bill Gates and that is the real reason they have chosen Linux.
SO expert?chew on that.
