The companies you listed are still around and doing pretty good. Though I?ll admit that Netscape isn?t what it used to be, and they are partly to blame for that. Even after AOL gobbled them up, they really didn?t do anything with the browser. Argue it was too late all you like, but the point is they basically gave up in the fight to recapture market share. Now, for some irony, they make a browser product that attempts to offer the best of the open source and proprietary worlds by using both the Firefox and IE engines in a single product.
As for the standard complaints against MS, I always wonder what the people who complain about the ?antitrust? would have done if they were the big shot. Would you not bundle applications? I mean really image an operating system without a basic text editor, picture viewer etc. If there was a firm law of no product bundling, MS would love it. They could then charge an extra couple dollars for everything that used to come standard.
