I'm excited about Vista
I'm not sure why so many people that obviously dislike Windows are reading an interview dealing with it's new OS? But I can only say personally, I've used Microsoft since windows 3.0 and I have never once had a problem, a virus nor any malware of any kind. It does require using common sense. You can't expect the OS to protect you from stupidity. Some people browse to highly questionable sites and I'm not sure if they are expecting the browser or OS to protect them? It would be like holding a car manufacturer liable if you wreck because you were driving in a crazy manner. I'm using XPSP2 now, and with the help of free anitspyware tools and free antivirus, my PC is clean all of the time and rips through all apps I run, like Visual Studio, Excel and 3 or 4 browser sessions is the typical set of windows I have open and XP flies between them and in them...that is with a 3 year old laptop with 512MB of RAM and SHARED video. How do all these people have problems all the time?
And about open source. Why does everyone say it's FREE? I don't get that. It's a business model. Does anyone think that RedHat or Novell or any other open source company is staffed with volunteers? I found the Snort story interesting and very descriptive of the usual open source experience. The software was free, then the owner wanted to expand the user base and to attract VCs, bowed to their demands of making all new Snort code proprietary. And when he sold his company for 225 Million I couldn't help be skeptical when he said it was never about the money. In my mind, if that were true he would never have agreed to close his source. I mean isn't it hypocritical to say that anything is fair game to propogate "free" software? By doing so it's starting to drag corporate America into it for keeps and that was the original open source movement was supposed to be against? What will keep it from imploding at some point? There are tons of products out there with no support. Those that have reliable support are from big corporations or large user communities. But when a system has 5000 copyrights attached to it, what happens when a sizable group fo them say, Enough! And refuse to allow anymore features to be closed or they are pulling the plug on their copyrighted portion? Or anything of the millions of thing like that, that could happen. I hope the trend of bashing Microsoft doesn't continue cause I don't believe that is helping the cause in the long run. And I coded on Unix for 10 years here at the healthcare facility I work at...so I'm not biased on way of the other. I loved working with Unix. I also love coding in .NET It's great. I think Microsoft is getting a very bad deal from commentors and many columnists. I think people tend to overlook the massive size and numbers of Microsoft and their products respectively. Of course they are targeted. I believe in some large part because they are an American company and they basically are America's desktop still to this day. And while people compare Linux and Windows head to head in most all circumstances, as though linux was ONE product, they try to dismiss the fact that linux systems require 3 to 4 times more patches and bug fixes that Windows. You don't see that on Slashdot very often.
Vista will be awesome. Just like it's been proven that your surroundings affect your mood, the PC and the graphic portion of Vista alone will be a great thing for people in general. Happier, more productive people just from the fact their day to day tools are more fun to work with. But this interview didn't touch an entire area of progress related to many new services that Vista will be optimized to handle.
