Software won't affect hardware...
then Consumer Reports talked to a load of idiots. There's no software out there that can load onto your machine that would require replacing hardware, unless someone did something themself, either to the BIOS, or some firmware on a piece of hardware. Other than that, I've never heard of any software that will damage hardware, and I've been a computer repair technician for over 10 years.

There are some people with no knowledge, or dealing with corrupt repair centers, that will replace unnecessary hardware due to software issues. But other than that, its not going to happen.
